About us?
The motto’s not been made that we’ll blindly throw our weight behind. Mottoes are for politicians and fortune cookies—and both tell you what you want to hear. What we have is an aim of another sort: The target is the truth. Namely, truths that ought to be plain and yet are not, either because earnest efforts are in league to conceal them or because they merely need a new light trained upon their whereabouts. We will consciously avoid becoming one more of those smelly little orthodoxies which are now contending for our souls.
Oh, you meant about us?
You rather flatter us with the inquiry. We’re three friends who—besides shared enthusiasms (arguing, drinking)—have no business being friends. We’re lucky that divergent life paths have been course-corrected by chance to bring us together. We’ve been pals ever since. (Let’s see if the amity survives the task we’ve set for ourselves.)
Sorry, you meant about us?
The unifying theme of our shows is the pursuit of truth, but the topics will range from politics and religion to sports and adversarial opinions about burritos. We’d rather not cage ourselves in from the get-go. But rather than give you a podcast manifesto of yes-yeses, we’re more likely to stick to a list of no-noes:
- No, we will not trail the news of the day like dogs under the dinner table. We’ll dredge up a narrative neglected or a story we feel is missing a third act, but we’re not in the business of monotonous reportage or partisan commentary.
- No, we will not blather aimlessly, without a plan. Each show will be dominated by a topic for which we have prepared ourselves to tackle thoroughly. We prefer time getting wasted, but never wasting time.
- No, we will not be boring.
You may laugh, learn, feel hectored or disturbed—turn us off mid-episode—but you will, at the least, pull out your earphones and hear things a little differently.
And if you must. Here’s our email. We will always read, sometimes respond, and reserve the right to recoil.
Happy listening.
